Net zero actions for Northumberland residents

We all have a part to play in reducing our carbon emissions and addressing climate change. This website provides useful tips and ideas to help you understand how your choices affect the environment and suggests actions you can take to combat climate change and protect nature.

Actions everyone can take:

There are many ways that you can take action to reduce your own carbon emissions and make a meaningful difference across Northumberland. Take a look at some of the actions below or download all the ideas as a PDF.

Switching your heating options

If you use an inefficient boiler, there are many options that can help you switch to a more efficient energy system, keeping you warm, saving you money and lowering your carbon footprint. The Energy Saving Trust has lots of useful information on switching and you can see if you are eligible for the Governments boiler upgrade scheme below.

Getting around

Reducing our reliance on cars is crucial to achieving Northumberland's net zero target by 2030. With only 13% of all journeys in Northumberland made on foot or by bike and with a third of all trips made in the county less than 5km, there is plenty of potential for us all to ditch our cars some or all of the time in favour of healthier, greener and happier ways of getting around.

Raise your voice

Talking to people within your family, friends and community is a really significant first step you can make in supporting community level action for climate change. Talking to people about climate change and about the co-benefits of the different actions they could take can help to spread the message and affect change. Take a look at how to start your own community group and become a Climate Champion.

Enhance green spaces

Planting trees is a powerful way to combat climate change as they absorb carbon dioxide, locking it away as they grow. If you have land or a garden, you can participate in Northumberland County Council's free tree scheme and receive a sapling to plant. If you own more land, there might be funding available to support larger planting schemes from the Great Northumberland Forest team.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Single-use plastics are environmentally damaging, requiring energy to produce and polluting ecosystems when discarded. In Northumberland, only plastic bottles are recyclable, while other plastics are sent to waste-to-energy facilities. To lessen their impact, reduce waste, reuse items, and make eco-friendly choices such as refilling water bottles, using reusable bags, and composting.

Shopping local

Deciding which shops to support and produce to buy can have an impact on the suppliers’ choices to shift towards more environmentally friendly produce or practices. Buying local can not only often be a more environmentally sustainable choice (reducing the transport costs of the products) but can also help support Northumberland’s local thriving economy. What is your carbon footprint?

Your carbon footprint is the measure of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere due to our activities, including driving our cars, heating our homes and even the food we eat. Calculating your carbon footprint is a great way to assess your impact on the world and begin considering changes you can make.
