We’re working to become more sustainable by introducing new cycle routes, electric vehicle charging stations, providing grants to support sustainable community projects and more.
Two projects are underway designed to protect two of the county’s villages from coastal erosion. In the south-east, work on the Cresswell Coastal Road Slope Management Scheme has started and is expected to last around eight weeks. It will involve stabilising the slope next to the road near Golden Sands Holiday Park, helping to protect this important coastal route while longer-term solutions are developed. Pupils across Northumberland have been taking to the streets to mark national Walk to School Week. Families have been encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ to see the benefits that come from small steps, from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates. A dedicated group of volunteers are working hard along the Northumberland coast to help protect nesting shorebirds. Each spring, birds such as ringed plover and oystercatchers come here to lay their eggs on sandy and shingle beaches, and rely on our help to keep them safe. Efforts to help beach nesting birds are led by wildlife rangers from Space for Shorebirds, the County Council’s ranger service that helps people to protect shorebirds. The Port of Blyth has officially launched its Battleship Wharf Expansion scheme, unveiling a transformative investment of up to £100 million to expand key infrastructure, increasing Port capacity to support the next era of clean energy growth. The early development phase of the scheme is being jointly funded by Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council and the North East Combined Authority, match funding £275,000 awarded by The Crown Estate through the second round of its
