Northumberland County Council will once again be backing Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean in 2026.

Ten years since its inception, The Great British Spring Clean will take place from 13 to 29 March and will involve passionate individuals, councils, community groups and businesses ensuring the environment that we inhabit is kept clean and tidy for years to come.

Last year, the campaign saw more than 462,000 bags of litter collected by volunteers up and down the country.

For Northumberland residents aiming to join in to help us beat this total, litter picking equipment can be accessed via emailing highwaysandneighbourhoodservices@northumberland.gov.uk. Those getting involved can also arrange for removal of their bagged litter via this same email.

For smaller amounts, bagged litter can be placed in the general household waste bin, with any recyclable items such as plastic bottles and drinks cans going in the recycling bin.

Following the 2025 campaign, 88% of volunteers completing a survey said that they felt they were part of a national movement, with a massive 95% feeling that they made a difference to their local area.

John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Rural and Environment said: “The Great British Spring Clean is a brilliant way for Northumberland residents to come together with the council and local businesses to look after our county, which is renowned for its beauty and cleanliness.

“It is ten years since Keep Britain Tidy started The Great British Spring Clean and the results of the campaign get better every year. A big thank you to everyone involved past and present.”
