Northumberland County Council has welcomed a range of public transport improvements in the west of the county.

The Council has worked with operator Go North East (GNE) to bring a number of bus service improvements for those living, working or visiting the Tyne Valley, including a new service.

Bus services including the 681, 682 and AD122 have been adjusted with a new service being introduced to connect Hexham and Alston, providing additional public transport provision for residents and visitors.

The 681 service is running up to every two hours Mondays to Saturdays, with some earlier and later trips, between Alston, Haltwhistle and Walltown.

The HW1 service is being provided through Reay's Coaches for travel between Walltown and Birdoswald with timed connections available at Walltown for passengers travelling from Birdoswald, Gilsland and Longbyre to Haltwhistle and beyond.

The 682 service has been extended from West Woodburn to Otterburn, allowing public transport access to Hexham. For Acomb village, the 680 is still running at its existing frequency.

The AD122 service has been renamed to 122 and has a slightly revised timetable with it being operationally linked to the 681.

The new 691 service is running between Hexham and Alston once per day in each direction, in the early morning and late afternoon, to allow for vehicles to move between Alston and the GNE depot in Hexham.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member with responsibility for public transport at Northumberland County Council said: "It's great to see more public transport being provided for the Tyne Valley area.

"It's so important we have these routes in place for residents and visitors alike helping them get around more easily and connect them to places for both work and leisure while allowing onward travel to neighbouring Cumbria.

"I look forward to seeing the benefits these changes will bring."
