Pupils across Northumberland have been taking part in International Walk to School Month, with over 6,000 pupils from 37 schools walking, cycling or scooting to school.  Walk to School Month is organised by the UK charity Living Streets and sees pupils celebrate the joys of walking and wheeling to school. The Council has welcomed extra carriages on a number of peak time trains on the Northumberland Line.  The rail project has been a phenomenal success, with around 700,000 passenger journeys already made since the line opened in December 2024.   The weekly passenger numbers are set to go higher with the opening of the fourth station – Blyth Bebside, on Sunday, October 19th – with the remaining two stations at Bedlington and Northumberland Park due to open in the coming months. 

A brand new station on the Northumberland Line will be completed as planned after funding was agreed by the North East Combined Authority.  In a major boost for passengers, North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and Cabinet have approved £10.9m of funding to deliver a brand-new station at Northumberland Park, connecting people in North Tyneside directly to the national rail network for this first time in decades as well as creating a seamless link with Metro and local bus services.

The Council is set to consider extra funding to ensure the Northumberland Line rail project can be completed in full as originally intended over the coming months.  It comes as Bebside Station is due to open in the next few weeks in October. Construction work is underway to create a new walking and cycling route in Tynedale.   Northumberland County Council successfully secured £14.7m from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to upgrade active travel routes in both Bedlington and between Corbridge and Hexham.
