Council funding is boosting sustainable community improvements

Community groups across Northumberland have been showcasing how a funding boost has improved the sustainability of their projects.
Nine community groups which were awarded funding from the County Council’s Environment and Climate Fund gathered at Morpeth County Hall for a morning of presentations, networking and idea sharing.
Blyth Riverside Resource Centre, Queen’s Hall in Hexham, Felton Climate and Nature (CAN), Coquet River Action Group (CRAG), Cramlington and District Red Squirrel Group, Ashington Town Council, Heddon on the Wall Parish Council, Holy Island Village Hall and Repurposeful CIC came together to discuss how the fund has supported their initiatives.
Projects ranged from renewable energy generation, climate-themed community gaming events for young people, biodiversity protection, food growing, building retrofitting to improve energy efficiency, waste reduction and repurposing and educational programmes.
Cllr John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Environment, Rural and Farming at Northumberland County Council said: “It is always fantastic to see how our annual Environment and Climate Fund is supporting sustainable grassroot projects across the county.
“This event has given these groups an opportunity to celebrate and share their achievements while inspiring others. I would like to thank all of those involved in their efforts in helping maintain and enhance our clean air and green spaces, reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and support nature recovery across the county for everyone to enjoy.
“I look forward to seeing many more projects benefit from the fund over the coming years.”
Every year Northumberland County Council offers a pot of £50,000 where eligible groups can apply
for up to £5,000 to help make sustainable improvements to their projects.
