STEMFest 2023

The Climate Change and Great Northumberland Forest teams attended the North East STEMFest 2023 at the VERTU Motors Arena in Newcastle in July.

The annual festival aims to encourage and inspire young people from North East schools in STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The teams chatted to students from across the whole North East about how forestry and sustainable woodland management bring lots of benefits to the environment. Potential routes into forestry careers were discussed from degrees to apprenticeships and other qualifications. One activity involved matching job titles to job descriptions to help them understand the wide range of careers available.

The students were surprised to learn how much forestry is carried out in the North East and the amount of items which are locally produced ranging from construction materials to toilet paper.

Students were able to get hands-on and explore activities including working out a tree’s age by counting tree rings of a cutting that was over 100 years old, and finding out about the different types of trees that wood can be sourced from.

Each school was provided with a free tree pack to take away which contained five different species and information on tree planting.
