Updated plan will protect Northumberland's coastline

Updated: Dec 17, 2025

A new management plan is being put in place by the County Council to ensure that Northumberland’s designated stretch of coastline continues to be protected.

The new plan, formally adopted by the Council, will cover The Northumberland Coast National Landscape, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which runs along 64km of coastline from near Berwick-upon-Tweed to the Coquet Estuary.

The Northumberland Coast National Landscape Management Plan will run until 2030 to ensure that the Natural Beauty of this area is conserved and enhanced.

Cllr John Riddle, Cabinet Member Environment, Rural and Farming welcomed the new plan.

He said, “Our coastline here in Northumberland is renowned for being a stunning attraction for residents and visitors all year round.

“Our county has the finest beaches, coastline, and countryside of anywhere in the UK and we want to play our part in protecting these beautiful places.

“Much of our work as Council has the potential to affect the special qualities of our coastline, such as planning developments and highways works, and it is our duty to ensure our work does not negatively affect this area.

“It is important we continue to work with others to ensure they remain as unique and welcoming for residents and visitors to enjoy for decades to come.”

Local Authorities have a duty to prepare a Management Plan for all AONBs (National Landscapes) within their area and to review these at least once every five years.

As part of the Levelling-up and Regeneration Act 2023, this Management Plan will help Northumberland County Council as the local authority to fulfil its duty for the area.
